REPORT FROM CHARLES SUHOR
Wow! Over 250 musicians and other friends went to my brother Don's benefit concert/jam session on Monday at the Palm Court Cafe. The music was great--so many of the best jazz players in New Orleans.
It was fine seeing so many people there, from old friends to admirers of Don who I'd never met. Don's wife Bridget and his two sons Nick and Chris were there, as was my daughter Beth and son David, who drove in from Tallahassee and Pensacola, respectively. David is a fine jazz singer--he sang "Teach Me Tonight," with great response from the audience. Of course, my siblings Mary Lou and Ben were there. So was our cousin Gerry Roth (>Leonie Suhor Roth>Antun), and I was pleased to meet my cousin Albert's lovely granddaughter, Amy Thomas Jandres (>Ann Suhor Thomas>Albert>Antun).
I spoke to the crowd on Don's behalf and read a couple of anecdotes about him from my book on jazz in N.O. in the postwar years. I donated twelve copies of the book and they sold out rapidly. It was a touching and memorable evening. The whole family was deeply moved by the warmth and good will in the room.
Some people who couldn't attend asked about contributing. We've set up a benefit fund, so a check can be made out to "Don Suhor Donation Account" and sent to my sister, Mary Lou Suhor, Apt. 616, 3443 Esplanade Ave., N.O., LA 70119.
There will be conference with doctors to see what the treatment options are. Don's cancer seems to be very aggressive so he might not be a candidate for chemotherapy. Even if so, he might choose pain-relief treatment, examine nontraditional approaches, investigate hospice, or whatever. Your continued prayers and healing intentions are welcomed.
The outlook is considerably better for my sister Jane Suhor Duffy. She had the first chemo for her lung cancer condition this week and next steps will depend on her reactions to this. She continues to have circulation problems that keep her off her feet, but we're hopeful that this will clear up and give her better mobility.
Best,
Charlie Suhor
